What vehicles did you install in the most?

Was this like a full-time job? Or just as an on the side thing as a mechanic?

Pickup trucks of all varieties (this is oil and gas country, and rig pigs were a solid half or more of my clientelle).

Is there some kind of lockout that would prohibit a passenger from blowing into the breathalyzer for the inebriated driver? I know it's silly and why wouldn't the passenger just drive, just curious how difficult these systems are to defeat, because I'm certain people try all the time.

Is it possible for someone who is sober and has never had a sip of alcohol to fail a breathalyzer test?

Full time Job, m-f 9-5. Was court ordered installs, but through a number of contracts, etc. At arms length from the gubmint. Had a dedicated bay in a shop contracted for the work, but often had 3 bays tied up with installing swapping, troubleshooting, and whatnot. Contract was for 2 a day, but pushed out a lot more than that, was busy enough to have people do my paperwork for me.

Dodge Journey was a real bastard. anything VW and electric is a delight. also any thing that doesn’t run well enough to be on the road but is.

I’m assuming that in oil and gas country the ones that shouldn’t run but do are fairly plentiful.

Any installs memorable?

Do they get removed eventually?

Any repeat offenders?

How sensitive were those devices? Like would they lockout at 0.04 BAC even if they weren’t supposed to trip until 0.08?

yep, mouthwash will do it. If you leave a bottle of o.j. in a hot car it doesn’t really turn into a vodka screwdriver but will start to ferment just enough that the machine will pick something up. Also for some reason, pizza messes with it. Also people can drink so much that you can smell the liquor all around them but blow under if they’ve sobered up enough.

My aunt has had two of these and is about to get her third (she had a problem - obviously - but has thankfully sobered up after flipping her Malibu this past summer and being pulled out of it with a BAC of .48). Anyway, when her Malibu had one, she just drove her other car that was for sale but hadn’t sold yet. Do they ever make people get the breathalyzer installed on multiple vehicles?

I used to install them also back when I worked for circuit city. We had one guy who was a dickehead to the police during his arrest... went on a rant “f you guys I own ten cars...” Guess what? I installed intoxalock(s) on all ten lol

Have to be careful with that, much privacy involved. But here’s some quickies.

-Angrily stared down through glass door by crackhead the whole time I worked on his vehicle.

-Found condom on driver’s side floor and made customer come and retieve it.

-Live mice.

-Dead mice.

-one real dick brought his car in for seervice with a cold beer in the cupholder. I judiciously spilled some in the cup holder, and a little on the mats (oops) and parked his car on the street. It was still there not starting when I closed up, he didn’t come in and ask for help stangely enough.

-People constantly calling and saying the box made their car die on the highway or something (the box can’t turn off a car, only interrupt the starter.) and having to explain diplomatically that “it’s not the booze-box, your car is just shitty”

They let you get away with next to nothing, can’t say but there’s a limit set. below that you get a warning, but the car will start.

Also:

-What do you mean I can’t call onstar to start my truck? - well, you can you just have to go out, warm upthe thing, blow in the thing and then you can call onstar- (stomps out)

-Had an Audi for 4 days trying to figure out why it continuosly fried machines (found it, long story)

-Had Volkswagen dealer tell me a car couldn’t even come out of park with a bad airbag controller in the column. (challenge accepted) they also told me it probably wouldn’t just start upon installation of a new one, would need to go to vw service for programming. (it was fine. After the whole broken volkswagen ordeal, the client listened to me and got a toyota. we got along great, and that was the only car I broke the whole time.)

-Was threatened by a guy we thought was a goof. we googled him and he had done 22 federal years for multiple bank robberies, highspeed chases and taking a cop hostage when they finally caught up to him.

-built a special rig for a guy who was stone deaf and couldn’t hear the beeper or the alarm, rigged some leds to the alarm wiring and put the blinker on top of his dash. Had to remove shortly thereafter, because someone found it to be in violation of the program for modifying a box.

-you removed this 6 months ago, and now my heated seat stopped working.

-had one guy (the crackhead) just get fed up, traded in his vehicle and told the dealers to “keep it, I hate that fucking thing”

-You F#@*! Piece%&@#%%# im gun$%#@@$ your mum!)**^&^% etc. “that’s nice but the judge sent you, so go sit down”

focus (2012 only) reqired jumpers and 2 sets of hands, diodes and fuse pulling to get it to go through the check-in, Cars with smart keys, push button starts are often more like 4.5 volts not 12 so would have to relay it to a 12v source so the key could talk to the box. Diesels can be a bastard to get a reliable tach signal from (cummins in particular). The system I installed was out in the early 90's and just couldn’t keep up with the new cars. also wasn’t meant for diesels.

I worked for a place when Connecticut started installing them in peoples cars what a shit show. We had one guy one Saturday bring this piece of shit truck in that would barely start in the first place. the pick up truck that was filled with beer cans. he brought a cooler while he was waiting and was drinking in the parking lot, when it came time for him to leave he tried to blow and failed. We left him there because he didn’t want us to call the police he said he’d figure it out the truck was still there on Monday morning. It was the first one we had ever done in Connecticut really had an established too many rules yet it was really fucked up.

Yeah, they’re not new here, but they just started getting tough and giving them out to everyone. Still a shitshow, most people were embarrassed to be there, played by the rules, can’t say they didn’t complain, but I cant say the device was reliable. Then there’s always that guy, who even if the judge sent him, won’t be inconvenienced, has to get something for nothing, and even tries to “get what he’s owed” out of the shop somehow.
